Travel: Banff, Kananaskis & Canmore

Lake Louise, Elbow Falls, Grassi Lakes and Johnson Canyon are all beautiful destinations located in, or near, the Rocky Mountains. Many of the hikes and tourist hot spots are a short distance from Calgary, Alberta, and can be reached by car. If one wants to be immersed in the mountains while visiting Alberta, Banff and Canmore are both small towns which offer amazing views and great trails.

The town of Banff is located in Banff National Park, while Canmore sits near its boarder. There is a small fee to enter Banff National Park, which every vehicle must pay. Annual passes are available. Escape the busy city and breathe in the fresh nature air.

Banff National Park, Alta – the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise as seen from the lake. Lake Louise is a popular destination 40 minutes from the town of Banff. Canoes can be rented from the hotel for public use. In the winter there is an operating ski hill on a near by mountain, and people are invited to skate on the lake once its frozen over.

Banff National Park, Alta – Johnson Canyon is a two part hike, one leading to the lower falls, and one leading to the upper falls and ink pots. The journey to the lower falls is an easy 20 minute stroll along an installed cat walk, the trail which leads to the upper falls is a bit more challenging and takes 45 minutes.

Kananaskis, Alta – Elbow Falls is a serious of small waterfalls along the Elbow River. Visitors are welcomed to walk along the designated pathways. Devastating damage was done to the falls during the 2013 Alberta flood, the attraction was forced to close but has since been reopened.

Kananaskis, Alta – Nakiska is a popular ski resort perfect for all skill levels. The resort is the closest to Calgary and is only an hour drive away.

Canmore, Alta – Grassi Lakes Trail is a moderately easy hike which leads to two lakes and an opportunity to rock climb. The climb has amazing views and visitors will pass a beautiful water fall.  There are two trails offered, an advanced route and an easy route.
